Men and Style of the 1930's & 1940's

Did you know that men fashion had a “romantic era”?  the 1930’s and 1940’s is known as inspiring romantic fashion era for men fashion.  Men silhouettes consist of high-waisted trousers, pocket squares, and jaunty hats.  The Jaunty hats are contributed to Langston Hughes.

Have you ever seen a man in a suit and said “My, that suit certainly makes the man.”  When a man wears a suit, he is view by fellow gender admirers along with women.  When a suit makes the man, a tie is needed to speak the viewing audience.

Neckwear is one of  two personal items that make a man’s wardrobe.  The neckwear, along with the shirt speaks to the viewing audience as to whom the man is in the suit.

When a man sports a suit, he says that he has certain awareness to fine dress and apparel.  This does not mean a K-mart purchase suit compares with a custom made Todd Odem collection.

This means, when purchasing a suit, the purchaser needs to know fabrics.  Men suits are mostly created out of a jacquard or Mogador fabrics.  And let’s not forget poly and other blends.  When comparing fiber contents, think of how the suit feels to the touch and how the suit pants hang from the waist  (viewed with and without  the sport jacket).  Jacquards are woven patterns and are light weight and has the appearance of richness.  Mogador is a mix of cotton and silk.  A well made quality suit is made of 100% Mario wool.  Mario wool is worn all year round.

Do not forget your tie.

Your tie can be a four-in hand knot, bowtie or a Windsor knot.  What’s the difference?  A four-in-hand knot has a narrow closing close to the body of  tie (looks like the letter ‘V’ when completed) and the upper edge of the tie is wide (close to the chin).  A bowtie has a total of four folds, two folds on each side of the chin.  The Windsor knot is wide looking (no tailor construction as the four-in hand knot.  The Windsor is tied with a wide appearance at the chin and necktie body.   The Windsor looks like the letter ‘H’ when tied correctly.

Remember, a suit specks to your view audience and when we talk to our audience, we want to speak WELL.

Until another time,
