   "I mostly taught myself to bake. I loved sweets. I used to hang around the kitchen when my mother was baking a pie or cake for Sunday dinner. We were poor and I was too young to realize that we could not have something sweet any day we wanted. I remember telling my mother that I was   going to bake a cake, pie, or cobbler every day when I grew up. I was 9 or 10 years old at the time. By age 12, I was  making the dessert for Sunday dinner. It must have been good, because the preacher started eating at our house every Sunday"
