WW Web & PC Chat
By the K-R Staff Writers Ubiquitous Computing?
Can you say "Ubiquitous
Computing"? You might as well get used to the term. You are going to hear it
more and more as it refers to providing an end user computing and
communications at their fingertips, anytime or anywhere. It means
that all of your home devices will be connected to a network that has Web
capabilities. Consequently you will be able to dial into your network on any
computer or device that can connect to the World Wide Web. Once connected
you can turn on, off, set, change, or whatever your central heating or air
and other appliances on your home network. Obviously you would want your
computer (s) to be connected to this network. Therefore if you set a CPU
program to run or whatever…just let your imagination run wild and think of
the chores you could do before arriving home.
The first thing that comes to
mind with a system such as described is safety. As in a person
setting the temperature on the range to high causing the pot to boil
over, or you may burn diner instead of cooking it. So the idea would be to
make sure you take all the proper precautions and only install those
appliance that are network friendly so to speak.
Nevertheless, Ubiquitous
Computing is coming and coming soon. You may have choices by this Christmas
buying season.
You will be able to interact
with your alarm system to summon police, ambulance or other emergency
services by a simple command. Consequently these services will also have
access to your smart appliances if you provide them access. Services from
your local utility companies such as the water, gas, and electric company
will be a mouse click away.
Think of it. You will be able
to download your favorite selections from Blockbuster and other video
rentals, program them to be shown at a specific viewing time for you or
family members. No waiting in line for rentals or arriving to late to pick
your favorite move. Consumers, as well as Entrepreneurs will be able to
download Audio selections (CD's, Books, & Instructional
Cassettes). This is an area where your imagination will be your guide. Use it to predict the uses such a network will provide. Submit inquires and suggestions to: Katara-Rhythm@chiia.com
